SEC Communication & Media Training Empowers Churches for Digital Evangelism

Over 100 people attended the SEC Communication and Media Training Day which took place at Balham SDA Church on Sunday 2nd February 2025. The training day was an enrichening experience for those eager to elevate their church’s media and communication strategies. The event brought together a series of expert-led workshops with each focusing on a critical aspect of church media and communication.

The first workshop presented by Neil Nunes, a BBC Radio Newsreader and Elder at the Croydon SDA Church explored integrative media evangelism – from broadcasting to baptism and from online success leading to offline success. Elder Nunes very engaging and interactive workshop demonstrated the various means and ways churches could make themselves more visible and attractive to the community through media, with the ultimate purpose of leading individuals to Christ. “There can be no success in mission without a clear vision,” said Elder Nunes before adding, “Media is the vehicle by which you share a message and it is the single most powerful entity in the world today so we must use it wisely.” Elder Nunes, who had been a radio presenter in Jamaica before becoming a BBC Radio Newsreader in the UK, encouraged attendees to present the message in a way which relates to the communities they desire to reach and to always give the glory to God when as result of ministry souls are won for His kingdom. He shared examples of a multi-channel media approach involving departments within his church which led to baptism and discipleship of new believers. “Media is for people and most importantly it’s for God’s glory – we must therefore use the various media platforms to bring across the gospel message in creative and engaging ways to attract viewers who later become believers.

Pastor Dan Serb, Vice Principal of Newbold College shared the Do’s and Don’ts of Media with the use of a case study on a project he created called BelievAble Talks – a recorded 7-episode series which explored themes of the Bible through science. The results at the series end included some new converts to the faith. Pastor Serb encouraged attendees to seize opportunities, work to their strengths and interests, network with others and seek expert advice from those already in the field. He ended his workshop with the following words taken from Romans 10:14: How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

Kristiyan Panayotov, BUC IT Assistant presented on preparing for the new Adventist Website platform where attendees were equipped with knowledge as well as given the tools to create a more impactful online presence for their church to enhance outreach and engagement. The day concluded with a presentation from SEC Communication and Media Director, Dr. Sorin Petrof, who introduced and distributed the updated version of the Communication and Media Guide which offers practical steps enabling communication and media officers to fulfil their role both in church and to the community wherein they have been called. A Q&A session with the presenters and the SEC Communication and Media team ended a highly productive day.
