True Service, Enduring Faithfulness

Pastoral Letter, 9 October 2026

Dear Church Family,

As the week draws to a close, I am thankful to God for the way in which He has provided for our every need. In His profound kindness and wisdom, He has given us this life as an opportunity to cultivate a genuine heart of Christian character and service.  Each of us will have different roles but service unifies us all, but none of our roles are a right, but rather a wonderful privilege.  It keeps us humble when we remember that He can accomplish His work without us, yet He still invites us all to be a part of it.

Since our calling is so sacred, we must constantly examine our motives. In Matthew 7, Jesus confronts those who will say, "Lord, did we not preach, testify, and baptise many people in your name? Did we not do this or that?" His response reveals a sobering truth: their agenda was entirely self-promoting. They were lifting up themselves, not Christ. Their interests were not His interests.

True ministry must always be carried out in the interest of God and His glory. If we achieve anything by His grace, it is simply for demonstrating His goodness through our service. We must ask ourselves a critical question: what would happen if God stopped cooperating with us? He is the one who causes the sun to rise on both the just and the unjust, and His justice is absolute. God created us with the intention that we would reflect His image.  God is never unjust but can we honestly say the same about ourselves?

An authentic call to ministry or service must have respect, compassion, and integrity at its foundation. Without these core values, ministry dies. As Ellen G. White beautifully notes in The Desire of Ages (p. 640), the church was established by Christ through His death specifically to minister to the needs of humanity. Jesus mingled with people as one who genuinely desired their good (The Ministry of Healing p. 143). We are called to minister like Him, which is only possible when we intentionally spend time in His presence. By spending time with Him, we become like Him.

Things may not always unfold in the way we hoped, planned, or worked for. In those moments, we can rest with absolute trust that God is still working. When He is ready to do what needs to be done, no one can stop Him.

Living with that kind of trust requires enduring faithfulness: a quality often modeled so well by our leaders. This week, Pastor Robin Lewis marks his 40th year in ministry. May God’s richest blessings be with him on this very special anniversary and we thank God for sustaining him through all his years of service. As Pastors’ and Leaders’ Appreciation Month continues, with this weekend (Sabbath, the 10th of October) especially allocated to the appreciation of pastors.

Some examples we are suggesting are prayer, thanksgiving, cards, modest gifts, letters or words of appreciation, a fellowship meal or gthering, a presentation or testimony during the worship service agreed through the appropriate church process or practical assistance. We hope that you have something special planned to recognise them for all they do as we continue to work together for cause of Christ.

“We will go, we will go
Where God Leads, we will go
We will follow Christ, and spread His love
We will go where our Saviour leads.”

May God bless you all.
