From 23-25 September 2024, the SEC administration, directors, and area coordinators gathered at Hay's Wood Retreat Centre for a pivotal residential meeting. This meeting was not just a routine event, but a crucial opportunity to comprehensively review the SEC's strategic direction, evaluate existing risks, and devise a plan for the organization's objectives in 2025. It was a testament to our collective commitment and the importance of our roles, providing us with a platform to reflect on past efforts, assess current performance, and realign our approach to future goals.
The retreat lasted three days, with each day focusing on a different aspect of the SEC's strategic plan. Day 1, themed "Where Are We Going and Where Are We Now?", centred on assessing the SEC vision and current standing. It opened with a worship session followed by a strategic overview presented by the SEC President, Dr Kirk Thomas. During this day, the facilitators, Antonio Belgrave and Mfakazi Ndebele, initiated critical discussions among participants, including reflecting on achievements, identifying challenges, and brainstorming improvements for the SEC's trajectory towards 2027.
Day 2, titled "What's Getting in the Way?" was dedicated to identifying obstacles that hinder progress. Following worship and connection time, participants candidly evaluated the risks and issues currently facing the organization. The focus shifted to finding practical solutions, with sessions designed to encourage innovative problem-solving through open discussions in the "Solutions Marketplace."
On Day 3, the focus turned to "De-Mystifying 2025 and Beyond." The morning was devoted to joint planning, as leaders worked through a structured process to align their efforts towards the collective goals for 2025. The residential ended with a powerful closing call to action delivered by the President, underscoring the urgency and importance of moving forward with the agreed strategic initiatives.
The retreat was not only a platform for strategic discussions but also a testament to the collaborative spirit within the SEC leadership. Through structured sessions and collaborative workshops, each participant's unique perspective and expertise were valued, laying the groundwork for a more integrated, resilient, and forward-thinking organisation. This fostered a deeper sense of connection and alignment within the leadership, instilling a sense of optimism about the future.
