Edmonton SDA Brings Community Together for Annual Harvest Festival
Glorious sunshine descended on a certain ward within the borough of Enfield as Edmonton SDA Church celebrated its annual Harvest Festival at Houndsfield Road. There were sheaves to be garnered in as the members and visitors commenced the celebrations with a service of thanksgiving on Sabbath 19th. It was a celebration with a difference, as several speakers ministered on the significance of harvest under the theme “Giving Thanks.”
As was highlighted by one of the speakers on Sabbath, harvest is much about sharing, and this was extended overwhelmingly on Sunday at the Houndsfield Road Annexe. Inside, a beautifully crafted decoration of flowers, fruits and vegetables created a kaleidoscope which was displayed within one corner of the building. This tapestry of colours and nature was juxtaposed with cans of food which members had willingly donated. The setting was enhanced by a wide array of cultural and traditional foods on display, as several tables were manned by those who willingly gave of their time and effort to create a spectacle which was awesomely pleasing to the eyes.
An atmosphere of sharing and thanksgiving was made even more welcoming as families and community members mingled and partook of the palatable delights and delicacies which were free for all attendees. Staff of the nearby care home, with whom Edmonton has a monthly visitation, joined the celebrations. Patrons of the Edmonton SDA food bank enjoyed the fellowship as they sampled foods from the different countries while they interacted throughout the day. A mobile massage therapist was also on hand to offer services to those who needed a touch from the Lord’s hands.
The Personal Ministries team never misses an opportunity for evangelism. Hence, a welcome table with literature and books written in the languages of some locals was on display within the entrance to the hall. Patrons were handed a coloured goodie bag with literature which offered the opportunity for them to meet Jesus in the pages of E. G. White’s Steps to Christ.
Children were amused and entertained with floor games and a free bouncy castle. When told that the bouncy castle was free, one youngster questioned, “Did you just say it’s free?” It was the perfect opportunity to fulfil the harvest mandate of planting a seed. A seed was truly planted, and we pray that the husbandman will do the watering. Many of the children had face paintings of exotic creatures—butterflies, bees, animals and flowers. Some even had their national flags painted on their faces too.
As the curtains were nearing being drawn on the day’s celebrations, harvest produce was distributed to the community, and so the significance of sharing was even more palpable. What was truly significant was every mouth fed, thirst quenched, heart touched and Christ glorified. The harvest truly is plentiful, and we pray that the Lord of the Harvest will send forth reapers.
