Following the Flow of God's Mission
Pastoral Letter, 4 September 2026
Dear Church Family,
The meaning of the name of the country where I was born, “Guyana,” in Amerindian literally translates to ‘the land of many waters.’ There, low-lying areas can, at times, become waterlogged by heavy rain, leaving behind large water puddles and pools. Within a few hours, if not a day, these have evaporated but if not, it isn’t unusual for these pools to become stagnant. In contrast, you will also find large powerful rivers in Guyana, like the Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo rivers, all moving forward with strong currents and teeming with life. Sometimes I like to watch videos of fishermen and their catches at these same rivers, at times labouring intensively, taking great efforts to equip and position themselves where the fish are and carefully baiting their hooks or throwing their nets, the hauls they bring in, all part of a very intentional strategy. It reminds me that as a Conference, we work best when we work strategically and work together as “fishers of men” to shine the light of the gospel right where the people are.
The Church is not an institution with the purpose of merely keeping ourselves going, without an eye on growth and movement. Maintaining the status-quo can lead to an experience that we should not have to go through: the quiet, imperceptible evaporation of the water when our presence shrinks. The thing that prevents this situation is staying connected to the invigorating power of mission and all the life that brings. Neither are churches to become stagnant or unhealthy, attracting toxicity. This is because the Church is a prophetic movement, here by the special design of our God as an agency of salvation, through whom the entire world will receive the final revelation of the love of Christ. During Camp Meeting, we got a very special sense of movement as we witnessed precious souls courageously stepping forward in response to God's call to give their lives to Him. This is a message to us all that the river of mission continues to flow. Wherever the gospel is shared with love, lives are transformed, hope is renewed, and God's kingdom grows.
The Bible reveals our trajectory in the progressive unfolding of Bible prophecy, which reflects a divinely ordered process. In Acts 1:8, we are told that the Church would receive a power not to remain static, but one that results in the gospel spreading in an orderly, progressive way until it reaches “the ends of the earth.”
We continue in our journey today, following in the footsteps of God’s people in the past and our pioneers here in the UK, like Elder John Loughborough. He arrived in 1878, to face a freezing climate and an equally icy social response. Yet, he persevered because he believed all things were possible through God. Ellen White sent a sharp mandate to our British territory, declaring: “The Lord is not asleep, if England is... He will give success to His work when His workers arouse to the emergency.” They continued to move forward and these are the footsteps we continue to walk in today, step by step.
This is encapsulated in our Go SEC Inspired for Mission Strategy, which emphasises four core areas:
Christ in Our Hearts: A deep, real, and personal faith in Jesus.
Christ in Our Homes: Daily worship, nurture of family and friends, living for Jesus.
Christ in Our Churches: Congregations that are safe places for meeting Jesus.
Christ on Our Streets: Taking the gospel into the public square through service driven by compassion from Jesus.
These strategic aims are structured yet versatile, allowing each congregation to adapt them to the unique needs of their local territories and people. May the examples of our Pioneers continue to motivate us as we launch OneVoice27 this Sabbath. More than an initiative, this is an opportunity for us to unite around our shared calling, speaking with one voice, one purpose, and one commitment to proclaim Christ and His soon return. As we move towards 2027 and beyond, our prayer is that every church, every ministry, every family, and every member will actively participate in God's mission.
