From Devotion to Mission
Pastoral Letter, 18 September 2026
Dear Church Family,
There is an important reality we must face: effectiveness in our public mission will fail without private devotion. If we want a vibrant Conference, we must first ensure Christ rules in our hearts as individuals from day-to-day. We can see this divine model established by our Saviour in John 15:5, in which Jesus says He is the vine, and we are the branches. A humble branch can’t produce anything on its own; it must abide completely in the vine to receive life and continued strength.
Both our ‘GO SEC: Inspired for Mission’ Strategy and our public activity begin with “Christ in our hearts” (p.5). From this starting point of deep personal connection to our Saviour, service flows naturally as an expression of praise as we respond to the realisation of who He is and thanksgiving for all He has done for us. If we abide in Him daily, His presence continues to feed us and sustain us. This shifts our focus from our limited strength to His unlimited power, ensuring that the fruit of our character and actions as a result of a healthy branch given life through its connection to “the Vine”, Jesus Christ.
When we remember His goodness, we cannot keep silent. With His love for us and His love for others overflowing inside us, true praise and gratitude cannot be suppressed. This is how thanksgiving can be powerfully used by God in many things, for example, it can soften the heart towards God and deepens the impression of Christ in our lives. It can change how we see our lives and our trials, move us to serve across every town and county of the SEC, and compel us to joyfully share with others what God has done for us.
In Psalm 106:12-13, an important observation is made regarding one of the most awesome miracles recorded in Biblical History the one that is most remembered in the Old Testament after Creation- the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea:
“Then they believed His words;
They sang His praise.
They soon forgot His works;
They did not wait for His counsel.”
In other words, right after the miracle of God parting the waters of the Red Sea, so His people could escape from captivity on a dry seabed, they believed with faith and sing His praises freely because of what they had just witnessed and experienced. But it did not take long for that memory to fade, and as a result, the praises did too. This led to agitation and panic that led to them making some rash decisions that did not glorify God. The same things are true for us today, including the strong connection between remembrance and worship. I pray that we will be a people for whom all God has done in the past, His goodness, His miracles, and blessings in our lives, will be retained in our minds always. Last weekend, God allowed me the awesome privilege of serving and worshiping with the members of Area 1, and I bring greetings from them to you all. It was a blessing to join together in Plymouth for a day of uplifting praise and fellowship, and we left refreshed and grateful for an unforgettable experience with God.
Let’s “…be thankful unto Him, and bless His name, for the Lord is good and His mercies are everlasting” (Psalm 100:4-5). He cares for us like a shepherd takes care of his sheep: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Here, the Psalmist, King David, had so much to share as he testified of what God does and who He is.
On this basis, we too can have an amazing witness for God to people all around us. Therefore, for the foreseeable future let us worship with OneVoice, witness with One Voice. Let One Voice 2027 become our present reality as we journey towards our future home.
We will go, we will go
Where God Leads, we will go
We will follow Christ, and spread His love
We will go where our Saviour leads.”
