SEC Health Ministries Hosts Super Wellness Weekends in London and Cambridge

The SEC Health Ministries Department recently held a series of Health Weekends across the Conference, bringing together leaders and communities for training, inspiration, and practical engagement. Hosted by Edith Samambwa, SEC Health Ministries Director, and featuring guest speakers Mrs May Solomon and Mrs Sharon Platt-McDonald, BUC Health, Women and Community Ministries Director, the weekends focused on equipping participants with tools to support health, wellbeing, and mission.

Mrs May Solomon is the current Southern African Union Associate Family Ministries Director and former KwaZulu Natal Conference Health Ministries Director.

Themed “Empowered for Joyful Mission: Whole, Well and Strong to Serve”, this leadership-focused weekend combined online and in-person sessions. Friday evening opened with a virtual Zoom session on Raising Healthy Children: Tools for Today’s Families, presented by Mrs May Solomon. Mrs Solomon capped the presentation with a helpful illustration of the parallels between the Old Testament sanctuary, the heavenly sanctuary, and the human body.

Sabbath began with a lively presentation from Mrs Sharon Platt-McDonald entitled BE HEALTHY. Members were challenged to undertake age- and gender-appropriate physical and mental MOTs and to create habits that support lifelong wholeness. Mrs May Solomon gave an inspirational message on the ministry of Jesus, sharing how His ministry was largely a ‘health’ ministry and showing, through video testimonies, how present-day health initiatives continue to impact communities for Jesus.

The day ended with a practical training session on how to conduct Children’s Health Expos, led by the SEC Health Ministries Director. The action-packed weekend concluded on Sunday with a certified Teen Suicide Prevention training facilitated by Dr Cecily Mwaniki. Thirty leaders attended this much-needed training, which generated heartfelt interactions.

The second Super Wellness Weekend was held in the Cambridge District, with the theme ‘Building flourishing families and communities’.

This free community health and wellness weekend for the whole family included a Friday evening webinar on children’s health, exercise, and nutrition, Sabbath morning presentations by Mrs May Solomon and Mrs Sharon Platt-McDonald, and a health expo for children. The Haverhill Pathfinders were coached and supported to conduct the health expo by the SEC Health Ministries Director and Haverhill Health Ministries Leader, Mrs Sandra Sturlong.

The children enthusiastically participated in all the activities at the different stations and were delighted to receive their certificates from the Health Directors at the end of the expo. A major highlight of the weekend was the community healthy cooking class conducted on Sunday by Mrs May Solomon, who is a certified plant-based chef. The cooking class proved to be a hit with all who attended, particularly the children, who helped in preparing some of the dishes.

Both weekends formed part of a broader SEC mission to equip leaders and communities with practical health knowledge and tools to serve and build flourishing communities.
