Hackney Brings Some Festive Cheer to London’s Homeless

Members of Hackney’s Community Ministries Team brought some festive cheer to London’s homeless during both the Christmas and New Year period.

For many families across the globe, Christmas and New Year is a joyous occasion where families are able to come together in feasting, the sharing of gifts and most importantly in remembering the birth of Christ as the promised Saviour of mankind from sin. For others, Christmas and New Year can be a less joyous occasion for a variety of different reasons including unfortunate instances where some are separated from families and friends or who have lost loved ones.

It’s for those reasons that Hackney’s Community Ministries Department were impressed by the Holy Spirit to reach out to the latter group of individuals to bring some well-needed cheer and comfort while also letting them know that they are not forgotten and in Jesus they have a friend who having experienced every hardship under the sun, including homelessness, understands and cares about all that they go through.

As well as ministering to the many homeless individuals to be found across Central London, the community ministries team also minister to the local community in Hackney each month through a feeding programme to those in need during these present times of hardship.

“As a team led under inspiration of the Spirit, we have been given a responsibility by Christ as Christians to go and spread the good news of salvation to all we come in contact with. Included in this mission is the meeting of the basic needs of humanity to those less fortunate than ourselves and so it is a privilege for us to be called to such a service to the community,” says Vilma Williams, Hackney’s Community Ministries Leader.

As well as the serving of over 170 hot meals and beverages, the team also distributed sleeping bags, winter clothing including coats, scarfs, wooly hats, jumpers and trainers.

“We are a team that all come together when it matters and share in the work. I could not have asked for a better team to work with and I give God praise in how He led us to put smiles on the faces of those often forgotten and disregarded during times where the majority across the globe are at their most happiest,” added Vilma.
