Hackney Prayer Walk: Praying For Our Communities

“If MY people, which are called by MY name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek MY face, and turn from their sinful ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land,” (2nd Chronicles 7:14).

Ahead of the lifting of social restrictions (described as “Freedom Day”) on July 19th which had been in place due to the global Covid-19 pandemic which has impacted on so many lives, (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/10/public-alarm-grows-at-boris-johnsons-plan-for-covid-freedom-day) members of the Hackney Seventh-Day Adventist Church joined by those from sister church, Wood Green, took to the streets of Hackney on a prayer walk for the community.

The Prayer Walk, which took place on the afternoon of Sabbath 17th July 2021, was arranged by the Church Leadership including the Pastoral Team, Prayer Ministries and Personal Ministries teams among others. An emphasis on the need for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our lives and that of the community was highlighted throughout the day along with biblical texts used as spiritual armour whilst going out on the mission field for God.

Those who walked were as young as aged 7 to as old as aged 91 proving that when it comes to Prayer Walking there are no age restrictions as all have a vital role to play when called out on God’s business. The procession stopped at five different points to pray for the residents of Hackney beginning at the Church Headquarters on Haggerston Road and ending at Kingsland Road in Dalston. At each stop prayers were made for the communities in relation to forgiveness, peace, spiritual healing, families and church commitment to the communities.

Many onlookers and passersby readily accepted the Steps to Christ, Power of Hope and the Health and Wellness books which were freely distributed throughout the duration of the walk, while others were open to receiving prayers for themselves and their families with some also expressing an interest in wanting to attend the church upon its full reopening.

Upon the completion of the Prayer Walk around prominent stop points within the local area, Hackney Pastor, Joojo Bonnie, who joined the Prayer Walk along with his family said: “Just as Joshua and his army walked around the walls of Jericho seven times before the walls came tumbling down, we too have walked around Hackney, praying for our communities knowing that God is able to exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask or think according to the power that works within us.”

Buoyed with excitement and anticipation in what God would do for the community, members then gave thanks to God through personal testimonies and thanksgiving for all He had done and promises to do when those who are called by His name humble themselves, pray, seek His face and turn from their sinful ways.
