Holding the Plank: Audrey's Challenge for ADRA

Grandmother and flower-arranger extraordinaire Audrey Balderstone has decided to defy the tyrannies of age by taking part in a demanding sponsored challenge to "hold the plank position" for five minutes every day in aid of ADRA -UK's online appeal. Her aim to raise £1000 has already been reached and now she is continuing the challenge to see how much more she can raise. "As you know, ADRA-UK has always been dear to my heart because of all the work David (her late husband) and others have done for those less fortunate than ourselves through ADRA," she says.

ADRA-UK, the charity for which David was a volunteer for many years, has not been able to do its usual annual collection this year. The organisation has suffered badly after its annual house-to-house collection was cancelled because of 'Lockdown'. "Usually, during the annual appeal in March/April ADRA raises around £500,000.00. This year it has only been able to raise £40,000.00 to help the most vulnerable of our society at home and abroad.

To help meet the shortfall the charity has decided to hold an online collection during July and August to raise the much-needed funds. "I would normally do a number of fund-raising events for them like a garden party, clothes sale etc. but of course cannot do that this year. Instead I have set myself the task of raising funds by challenging myself to hold the ‘plank’ position for five minutes every day. I aim to raise £1,000.00. Contrary to what my granddaughter thinks, this will be a challenge at my age (75)!"

By Sunday Audrey was doing well and reported, "this is my seventh day and I have exceeded my target of £1,000.00. I have been persuaded to carry on to see how much more I can raise. If you can contribute any amount, however small, I would be truly grateful - and so would those who benefit from the help ADRA gives."

Audrey will also find herself very fit! Her 'Just Giving' page is to be found here
