Know Your Worth – Area 1 Youth Day
Autumn has arrived but that didn’t stop us meeting at beautiful Chapel Porth for our Area 1 Youth Day in mid October. We had a fantastic time when speakers; Steven George (Theology graduate), Taryll Viviers (SEC Student Ministries lead) and Tara McCormac (Mental Health Nurse) shared on the topic ‘Know Your Worth’.
The hall was set up with comfy furniture in a circle for a warm, inviting atmosphere. Worship is always one of the highlights of our gatherings with contemporary songs such as ‘Breathe’, ‘Who You Say I Am’ and ‘My Lighthouse’ mixed with classics like ‘Come Thou Fount.’
Steven focused on building bridges and pointing out that outsiders become insiders around the table with Jesus. Through reaching out to others we give them worth and value like Jesus did for us all. Breaking down barriers, being all inclusive and genuine was the example Jesus gave us to live by. We can change the world one meal at a time.
Taryll pointed out that we should focus on our God given purpose not what others say our potential is. Jesus heard often about His potential from His disciples and the crowds around Him but He knew that their thoughts on His potential didn’t match up with what His purpose on Earth was. We need to live up to our God given purpose because putting our worth in potential doesn’t fulfil us.
‘Mental Health on Tour’ is Tara’s mission field, reaching out to groups to raise awareness for Poor Mental Health. She shared with us about her experience with mental health difficulties and opened our eyes to the facts and stigmas of poor mental health. As a community we should be supportive of those struggling around us and seek to understand and not criticize or judge. Dan especially enjoyed Tara’s talk saying he “Loved all the speakers but Tara on mental health was incredible. Really spoke to me. And good to chat to some new faces in church.”
As Steven pointed out, joining together ‘at the table’ was often Jesus’ first step to reaching someone and something that was encouraged to be continued. This is true even within our church community to strengthen and encourage one another in faith. So naturally the day started with freshly baked cinnamon rolls, croissants and fruit for breakfast and haystacks for lunch.
After lunch we walked to the beach and then along the cliffs to take in the best of the Cornish coastline. A seal even popped up to say hi! To end the day we shared pizza and games.
Pastor Steven Hulbert said “It was beautiful to see everyone coming together across Cornwall and Devon and beyond and having quality fellowship in the presence of God.” Everyone had a great time and can’t wait to meet up again.
