South-East London Community Church – 20th Anniversary Celebration
'Our Journey Together' was the theme for the 20th anniversary celebration at the South-East London Community SDA church on 10 September 2022. This church gathered to celebrate and thank God for the achievements since its organisation on 13 January 2001. It has through the years established three other churches in the South England Conference (SEC) and acquired a church building among a range of other achievements.
The weeklong programme started on Sunday 4 September with a community outreach fun day on the church premises. The community joined in various activities like face painting, youth sports activities, a Pathfinder display, BBQ and various games like musical chairs along with bouncy castle for the children.
On Wednesday 7 and Friday 9 September the members met via Zoom to review their church history. There was also an opportunity to watch video clips of various church members including those who have moved to other places in the world.
It was an exciting time of reflection and celebration. It began with church pastor, Lewis Quaye on the Wednesday who admonished members to remember their heritage as Seventh-day Adventists and our overriding mission of carrying the message to all the world starting in our community. Dr Albert Owusu Darkwa followed on the Friday and reminded us that the Lord can use anybody for His work, all He needs is a willing heart and an attitude of committed service.
On the Sabbath there was range of programmes including a Pathfinder display, the children's pantomime, a drama and music fiesta. There were reflections from our special guest of honour, current and previous first elders and pastors of the church. Dr Emmanuel Osei, SEC President was our guest speaker. His counsel was that, like the Israelites left Egypt, amid all the difficulties and challenges for the Promised Land, so is the Christian journey. He said that our journey as a church, like that of the Israelites, is tenuous and tortuous but the Lord will always lead. While we await the Lord's return, He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us so we should also learn from our Master and support each other, especially the weaker ones so that together we make it to the Promised Land.
Pastor Sam Davis (former SEC President) was the afternoon speaker. He commended the church for all its efforts and achievements but also challenged the church to do more in the community as salt, influencing it for good.
We would like to say a big thank you to all who participated in any way to make this programme a success.
