Tottenham Lighthouse SDA Church Celebrates First On-site Baptisms Since 2018 Renovations

Sabbath, 19 April 2025 was a day of jubilation and thanksgiving at Tottenham Lighthouse Church, as nine precious souls said YES to Jesus in baptism. Can you imagine the scenes of joy in heaven as God’s children publicly declared to the world that they were going to follow Jesus all the way?

To add to the excitement, it was the first time a baptismal service had been held in our church since building works started in 2018. This was only achieved through everyone coming together, united by the Holy Spirit. A big ‘thank you’ to Bro Elston Waldron and Sis Doreen Green-Tyser, Head Deacon and Head Deaconess, and their teams, and to First Elder Jacqueline Edwards, who rallied the Pastoral Team and the membership to ensure that all went smoothly.

Before the baptismal service, Pastor Sindi Mabena of the Peckham and Plumstead Community SDA Church shared a stirring message. This was not reflected in the title of her sermon, ‘Rest in Peace’. Her main text was Romans 6:4: ‘Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: …’ Pastor Sindi kept her message ‘real’ as she shared stories from her life, which helped to bring home the undeniable truth that Jesus is our only hope. She stated, “We might be ‘dead on arrival’, but ‘alive on departure’.” To listen to her full message, please click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj94_xlMv7c&t=3664s. Pastor Sindi was presented with a beautiful orchid and a box of chocolates.

Baptismal candidates examined by Ps Jeanville

The nine baptismal candidates were examined before the church by our pastor, Dr Jude Jeanville. They all publicly confessed their faith by responding with a confident YES to the baptismal vows.

The first person to step into the watery grave of baptism was Alyssia Rodgers, who wanted to publicly recommit her life to Christ. Next were brother and sister, Matthew and Angel Meguille Soyam. Their parents and siblings were quietly ecstatic as they watched them being immersed in the water.

Next was Daniella Lunan. She had come to the altar during Week of Prayer in November 2024 and was keen to recommit her life to Jesus. She has wasted no time in the Master’s mission, as she has already invited someone to our Bible studies who wants to be baptised.

Next was Malia Clarke. Elder Brenda Rutherford, who studied with her, spoke about her eagerness to learn. Her mum sang her special song, ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’.

The next candidate was Johanna Morris. She wrote in her statement, ‘I would like to be baptised because I believe in God, therefore I want to live a life that reflects Jesus Christ.’

Next was Paige Mitchell, who was accompanied to the pool by her mum and two of her friends from school. A talent was unearthed when Sis Tashae Waldron, one of our singers, teamed up with Bro James Awotwi to sing one of Paige’s favourite songs, ‘Nobody Greater Than You’.

Last, but definitely not least, were two sisters, Oluomachi and Amarachukwu Wadibia. Our hearts were overjoyed when we saw Sis Bernice Amartey, their grandmother and the matriarch of the family, being wheeled into church by one of her beloved sons, John-Mark. She was placed in ‘pole position’ so that she would not miss a thing. Joshua, their uncle, was already at church taking photos, and their other uncle, Josiah, was also there with his wife and children. Their parents, Michael and Marion Wadibia, and other family members and friends were also there to give support.

Their baptism brought home a clear message – God is NEVER late, He is ALWAYS on time. The nine new members of Tottenham Lighthouse Church were presented with gift packages by the elders.

Newly baptised with Pastors Sindi and Jude, Head Elder J Edwards and Elder B Rutherford

At Tottenham Lighthouse, we are still on a spiritual high. It must have brought great joy to Pastor Jude Jeanville, who was given the divine opportunity to baptise nine persons as he celebrates nine years at Tottenham Lighthouse. There are others who have come forward for baptism, so watch this space! All praise, glory and honour to our God.
