Empowering Churches to Build Safer Communities

Safeguarding awareness and 'Good Practice' training are essential to creating safe environments within our churches and communities. These programmes empower leaders and members with the knowledge and confidence to take proactive steps to ensure safety for all.

Training Levels

Safeguarding training is conducted at different levels to ensure comprehensive coverage:

Local Churches

  • Training is organised by the Designated Safeguarding Person (DSP), focusing on the unique needs of their church community.

  • Topics include safeguarding awareness, recognizing abuse, and implementing preventative measures.

Conference Level

  • The SEC oversees training for DSPs and provides resources to empower church leaders and members.

  • Training sessions focus on advanced safeguarding principles, incident handling, and leadership roles in safeguarding.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

  • A DBS check is mandatory for all individuals leading or volunteering in work with children or adults at risk.

  • The local church DBS Clerk ensures that these checks are completed and up-to-date.

Further Support for Churches

  • The SEC provides safeguarding templates, policies, and procedures to align with best practices.

  • Ongoing training opportunities, including workshops and webinars, ensure continuous learning for church leaders and members.

  • Collaboration with the British Union Conference (BUC) offers additional resources and guidance for churches.
