Community Spirit Shines as London Ghana SDA Church Tidies Up Plaistow

Plaistow, London – Sunday, 8th June 2025, marked a truly uplifting day for the London Ghana Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. Their annual community clean-up saw over 200 members—from the youngest to the oldest—enthusiastically tackle litter, clear weeds, and generally spruce up the streets surrounding their church.

The bright and sunny morning, with pleasant temperatures, provided ideal conditions for the dedicated volunteers. This yearly event, now a decade-long tradition, began around 10:00 a.m. after a brief opening prayer and instructions. Armed with litter pickers, brushes, and a shared sense of purpose, church members fanned out across Chadwin Road, Newham Way, the area around Newham Leisure Centre, and many more local streets, including Denmark, New Barn, and Alliance Roads.

A heartwarming moment occurred on Egham Road when a grateful resident spontaneously offered packets of crisps to the younger participants—a small gesture that was met with immense appreciation.

Council Praises Church’s Commitment

Jane Lofthouse, Labour Councillor for Plaistow South, observed the efforts on behalf of Newham Council. She was quick to praise the church’s tangible and significant impact.

“The fact that young people are enthusiastically participating in the clean-up is both impactful and commendable, as they are learning important life and transferable skills,” she remarked. Councillor Lofthouse also highlighted the church’s wider outreach, referencing their annual Health Expo, which she had previously attended.

Elder Emmanuel Nana Kakari, who oversaw the day’s activities, reiterated the church’s enduring mission to be a relevant and hopeful presence in the community.

“Our Food Bank is open every Thursday, and we are always ready to partner with the council to serve the community in whatever way we can. The physical needs of the community are just as important as the spiritual ones,” he affirmed.

By 1:00 p.m., over 60 sacks of rubbish had been collected, leaving the streets visibly cleaner and the community undoubtedly stronger.
