Dr Eurydice Osterman Leads “Sing When the Spirit Says Sing” Workshops in England
Two Sabbath afternoon music workshops titled “Sing When the Spirit Says Sing!” were presented by Dr Eurydice V. Osterman (USA), Fulbright scholar, composer, author, and educator, whose ministry emphasises the use of music to glorify God.
Dr Osterman has served as Chair of Music Departments at Oakwood University and Northern Caribbean University and has composed works for the American Guild of Organists. She is also credited in the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal with the musical arrangement of hymn 624, “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me,” and for composing the music for hymn 536, “God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens.” She has conducted music seminars across the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa, and holds membership in several professional organisations, including the national honour society Phi Kappa Lambda.
The workshops were held on Sabbath, 31 January 2026 at Southall Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, Southall, Middlesex, and Sabbath, 7 February 2026 at Handsworth Seventh-day Adventist Church, Handsworth, Birmingham. Each session explored music as a Spirit-led expression of worship, faith, and community.
The Southall workshop was organised by Ulanda Alexander, Music and Evangelism Coordinator for London Area 6D, in partnership with Lillian Kabambe, Prayer Ministries Coordinator. The programme reflected on Acts 16:25, highlighting the role of prayer and song as expressions of faith and witness, even in challenging circumstances.
The Handsworth workshop was organised collaboratively by Paul Liburd and Head Elder Derrick Thorpe, working with Ms Alexander. Philippians 4:8 guided the focus on music that is spiritually uplifting and reflective of Christian values.
In addition to the in-person workshops, Dr Osterman led a virtual prayer meeting hosted by Manchester North Seventh-day Adventist Church and moderated by Elder Lesmond Taylor on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, entitled “Using Our Gifts to Spread the Word.” The session, based on 1 Peter 4:10, encouraged participants to use their God-given abilities in service and ministry.
During her visit to the South England Conference (SEC), Dr Osterman was also able to accept an invitation from Dr Kirk Thomas, SEC President, to attend a lunch meeting with Conference Directors. She also participated in an interview on Adventist Radio London on Thursday, 5 February, hosted by Director Paul Lee and Manager Ray Patrick, Snr, where she shared insights on music, ministry, and the faithful use of spiritual gifts.
Across all sessions, Dr Osterman addressed the spiritual influence of music, exploring how musical choices can affect the mind, emotions, and worship experience. Practical instruction was given on vocal technique, congregational singing, and the role of music in worship leadership.
Musical contributions were provided by visiting soloist Zena Taylor of Manchester North SDA Church and the Handsworth Praise Team, led by Debra Mardner. Each workshop concluded with shared singing, prayer, and a sending song, reinforcing the message that music is a vital component of worship and ministry within the church.
