Egypt-Themed VBS Brings Joseph’s Story to Life at Plumstead SDA Church

The Plumstead Community SDA Church’s Children’s Department joyfully concluded a 4-day Vacation Bible School (VBS) programme with the graduation of over 16 children on 31 May 2025.

This very first VBS, held from 27 to 30 May in the church hall, followed the inspiring theme “Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace.” The children explored five key biblical lessons based on Joseph’s life:

  • God gives us Hope

  • God gives us Special Abilities

  • God gives us Wisdom

  • God gives us Forgiveness

  • God gives us a Family

The church hall was beautifully transformed into ancient Egypt, with colourful decorations, costumes, and creative artwork that brought the story to life for the children.

Each day, the children were grouped into “Egyptian families,” which became their home base for fellowship and learning. Mornings started with singing, worship, and lively discussions about life in Egypt, followed by an imaginary family trip to Egypt, where they learned valuable spiritual truths through fun and interactive activities.

The graduation ceremony was well attended by parents, guardians, and church members. Children’s Ministries Leader, Busi Khabo, shared a heartfelt testimony about God’s provision:

“Despite the challenges we faced with resources, God made it possible for us to run this programme. It was a blessing to see so many children grow in faith and joy.”

She also welcomed a new family who joined the VBS after a community invitation, celebrating their child’s graduation as a special moment:

“This reminds us that outreach works, and every child is precious in God’s sight.”

Special guest Craige Young, Children’s programme creator and founder of UYC (formerly Brits Kids), who provides VBS training for churches through the SEC, made a surprise appearance dressed as Pharaoh. He praised the ministry and shared his passion and support:

“Over the last 15 years, I’ve seen VBS grow from just a handful of children to vibrant groups that impact entire communities. This ministry is vital, and we must continue investing in our children’s spiritual journeys.”

Certificates were awarded by Pastor Wentworth Sewell, who also recognised volunteers with gifts of appreciation.

Pastor Sewell encouraged the church:

“Investing in our children is the greatest service we can give. While the church’s financial situation seems dire, trust God to provide the resources you need—He is faithful.”

Sis Khabo gave heartfelt thanks to the hospitality team for their delicious meals during the programme and to Craige Young for his support. A special mention was given to volunteers who helped with the training, including Chileshe Kani, a parent who played the role of Joseph, bringing the biblical character to life. Sis Pauline Okelo beautifully coordinated the graduation as Master of Ceremonies.

Congratulations to all the children and volunteers for a successful and blessed VBS 2025!
