Communion Meets Evangelism

East London Romanian Church Explores the Link Between Communion and Evangelism

Romans 10:14 – 15

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

On Sabbath 11th October 2025, Pastor Kwadwo Kwarteng-Ampofo visited the East London Romanian SDA. He delivered a seminar during Sabbath school, looking at Every Member a Missionary and delivered a sermon on Communion and Evangelism during the afternoon worship.

During the seminar, Pastor Kwadwo shared with the congregants that each member has a role in evangelism. This was emphasised when Pastor reminded everyone that the church is the body of Christ thus making each member important in taking part in evangelism. Through sharing his own story, being from a polygamous home, he was able to dive home the importance of using one’s own story when evangelising.

Pastor Kwadwo shared from Gospel Workers (p.352) work of God can’t be finished until the men and women of the church come together to do the work. He then followed up with the theological vision where the pulpit trains the pews, meaning that the pastor equips members to become missionaries. Therefore, it is important to note that evangelism should not only happen from the pulpit, but it must instead move outside the doors of the church.

It is crucial for individuals to understand what it means to be a missionary for them to engage effectively in this capacity. A missionary is not just a worker, but they are witnesses, and witnessing is something which flows from a relationship with Christ. Through developing a relationship with Christ, the life of the missionary becomes the sermon they share at home, at work, at school. For a church to successfully evangelise, it requires faith and prayer. By remaining faithful to God, He will come through.

During the sermon, Pastor Kwadwo asked the question “if we receive the assignment to proclaim, are we not then sure of His blood shed on Calvary for us?” as a means to allow congregants to understand the link between communion and evangelism.

He reminded everyone that when Christ says “I am”, it means that He was here before Abraham and has been with us since the beginning. As soon as Adam and Eve messed up, Christ came to die for them because He’s with us and we are to go forth and make disciples. With this he shared that where there is inactivity, Satan sees this as an invitation to occupy these spaces, occupying the field and engaging the members. When this happens, tensions then build within the church. All is not lost however, for Christ to then dine with us, we need to cleanse ourselves. For the Holy Spirit to fall on the church, all must come to the understanding that the church is not saved because of service, but instead saved for service.

Additionally, Pastor Kwadwo explained that the paradigm in the church must be changed as it relates to communion. As we come together, we must dine with God asking that we be prepared for service. He then explained that the steps for preparation includes prayer, studying the word of God, and having the power of the Holy Spirit.

He then followed with, if we keep getting sermons and bible studies which we keep to ourselves, it is pointless. What we learn we must then share and return to God that we may receive more. The recipient should be a giver.

He closed with the “secret of success in the work of God will be found in the harmonious working of our people” (Christian Service p.75). For the church to organise a combined evangelism strategy, there are 5 steps they should follow:

  1. Planning

  2. Church preparation

  3. Motivation

  4. Training

  5. Participation and Action.

To conclude, trough following the steps shared and taking heed to that which was shared during the seminar, the church will be a training ground where members are given the resources and training needed to go out into the community. Congregants shared that the East London Romanian has members who do weekly literature evangelism, an active WhatsApp group and participate in Bible Study online.
