Family Camp Retreat Revives Spirit of Brecon Gatherings in Worcestershire
The peaceful surroundings of Lenchwood Trust Christian Retreat Centre in Worcestershire were the setting for a small family camp gathering, consisting of 12 people, 2 dogs, and one slightly poorly chicken! The original intent had been to revive the spirit of the Welsh Mission’s Brecon Camp weekends, which had ceased running at the time of Covid.
Unquestionably, we were blessed with exceptionally warm weather, which allowed us to spend a lot of time outdoors and being able to admire the handiwork of our Creator on our doorstep.
Our worship theme for the weekend was ‘Being Family’, and we were mostly led by Pastor Isaac Liburd through the story of Joseph. The worship sessions that he led were very interactive, and he helped us to focus on such themes as trusting God even when circumstances are not favourable, forgiving others, letting go of our burdens and allowing God to take control; and then allowing ourselves to dream for something of value for ourselves and our families, knowing that God is right there with us.
For an additional worship session, we considered how we might keep our families (nuclear, extended, and church) special. This session rounded up with a relaxing craft activity where each person painted a wooden figure to represent someone else in their family, with a Jesus figure being central to each family. We all had fun trying to match each of the painted figures to the real person they represented.
We sang plenty too, both during our marquee worships, and then around the camp fire. We were mainly led by Robin on guitar, but we were also grateful to Manny and Doug for additional support.
In between, there was plenty of time to socialise, including over a shared lunch.
We are pleased to report that the slightly poorly chicken made good progress over the weekend.
The unanimous verdict is that we should repeat this gathering next year, hopefully with more attendees next time.
The dates for next year are April 29th – May 3rd 2027. If basic camping is not your thing, there are other more comfortable forms of accommodation, but these will need to be booked early. Please contact the writer on 07925 858297 or mikejbeamish@outlook.com.
