100 Years of Stanborough Schools
Stanborough Schools Centenary Celebrations
Stanborough Primary and Secondary Schools held their centenary celebrations over the weekend of July 6th and 7th. The strength and value of Adventist education were on full display as upwards of 1000 people attended over the two days.
On Sabbath, there was a real sense of excitement even before the 10am start, as past and present pupils, parents and staff, could be seen waving or running over to greet each other while making their way across Stanborough Park to the marquee erected for the event.
Against the backdrop of a centenary banner and photo display showing Stanborough Schools over the years, those in attendance were treated to excellent performances by pupils, and contributions by staff members and specials guests, in a service reflecting the school motto Dominus Magister Ludi Nostri (God is the Master of our School).
Among the highlights was Year 6 pupils telling the story of Stanborough’s beginnings through drama and song in their ‘Walk Though History’ presentation. Primary children also performed a visually striking mime of Jesus’ death and resurrection to the song ‘Arise My Love.’
Music was provided by the Praise Team and orchestra, with notable performances from Year 1 & 2 pupils, the Junior Choir, soloists, musical ensemble, and a piano and drum duet of ‘For Unto us a Child is Born’.
GC Education Director, Dr Lisa Beardsley-Hardy recognised Stanborough as one of the older schools among the 8807 operated by the Seventh-day Adventist church. She summed up her address on Adventist education with a quote from Ellen G White: true education “secures to successful students a passport from the preparatory school of earth, to the higher grade, the school above.”
This message was echoed in the sermon delivered by TED Education Director, Dr Daniel Duda. He challenged the congregation to be ‘People of the Book’, like the ancient Israelites. BUC Education Director, Gina Abbequaye shared her vision of Adventist education, and the importance of synergy between home, school and church. Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, praised the many ways Stanborough pupils serve the local community.
SEC President, Emmanuel Osei gave a dedicatory prayer for the institution, pupils and staff. He reflected on how God has led the Schools over the 100 years and how He will lead them in the future until He comes.
Acting Secondary School Headteacher, Eileen Hussey and Primary School Co-Headteacher, Angelika Horwood acknowledged the many teachers, governors and staff who served at the Schools throughout the years in the Vote of Thanks.
The celebrations concluded on Sunday with a Fun Day. Stalls selling food, drink and memorabilia were on offer. The children and adults also enjoyed sports, face painting, bouncy castles, free health checks and goodie bags.
