Barnet SDA Church Brings Warmth and Care to Tally Ho Corner

Barnet Church’s Community Services department, led by Joan Mabb and volunteers from the church, were ready to give out free hygiene packs and hot drinks at 10am on 20 December. Despite weather forecasts two weeks earlier predicting rain, after praying for no rain, there was no rain on the day. The morning sun shone brightly on the table set up at Tally Ho Corner, Finchley.

The setting up of the stall aroused a lot of curiosity from passers-by. Many accepted their free gifts and hot drinks. There were those who also wanted to know more about the church.

The hygiene packs were tailor-made, some prepared by the Community Services leader and some pre-packed and compiled specifically for men. There were 45 packs available for distribution, and all packs were handed out.

Hot drinks were made and served by the church volunteers. This was well received, as the day was cold and visitors appreciated the hot drinks. Wristbands with Bible verses also attracted more visitors, including children.

During this time, visitors who were in obvious need were also given details about Barnet Church’s Together We Thrive community space. This is a community space where visitors can come along on a Saturday afternoon and have a hot meal to eat in or take away. It is a safe, warm place where they can meet others, collect emergency food and toiletry parcels, and sit and chat with others who are feeling lonely.

For the few hours invested in reaching out, it was time well spent. One person commented that “the day went well…”. Barnet Church Community Services and volunteers are looking forward to their next day in the community, by God’s grace.
