Chinese New Year Outreach
Over the Lunar New Year of Horse, we have taken the opportunity in some cultural activities as an outreach to the community in Watford and Hendon areas.
On 8th February (Sunday), we had a Lunar New Year fun-fair style event in Watford, with various stalls offering a variety of festive treats, Hongkong style street foods, healthy freshly squeezed juices, DIY Chinese calligraphy and spring couplets, beaded crafts workshop, and simple games booths for children of different age groups. Over 140 people attended the event, which wouldn't be possible without the help and hard work from some 50 volunteer helpers consisting of church members and our community friends.
Some interesting facts for your information, spring couplets are calligraphy writings of blessings on two long strips of bright red papers. They are traditionally used as home decorations during Chinese New Year, hung on both sides of door frames - much like the children of Israel painting blood on their door posts at Passover. Chinese people believe that they ward off evil spirits and bring in good tidings to their homes.
On the following Sabbath (14th February) after the fun-fair outreach, we invited our community friends who helped us out at the 8/2 event, to join our worship service and hotpot lunch, as a gesture of gratitude as well as Chinese New Year celebration meal. We are so grateful that a few volunteer families came and some attending our church for the first time.
