Inspired for Mission: Gloucestershire District Hosts Powerful Personal Ministries and Community Services Workshops

On Sabbath, 7th September, the Gloucestershire District of churches were challenged to be ‘Inspired for Mission’. Though the weather was dull and grey, the church was filled with warmth as the congregation were prompted to think about their purpose and what God had called them to do.

The Sabbath School saw Pastor Royston Smith, the SEC Personal Ministries Director, lead a workshop on ‘Opening Your Gifts’. Pastor Smith guided members in exploring their own spiritual gifts by looking at their natural talents, considering where their passion lay, and reflecting on their personality. The workshop was delivered in Pastor Smith’s inimitable and charismatic style, prompting members to move outside of their comfort zone and think outside of the box, as God can use anything to deliver His ministry.

Councillor Angela Sterling-Baker simultaneously delivered a powerful workshop entitled ‘Mission-Purpose of the Family’. This explored the role of mission within the family home, with a particular focus on the guidance of children and young people. A member described it as ‘excellent, with plenty to think about’.

Pastor Nerine Barrett, SEC Community Ministries, delivered the sermon, asking individuals to ‘Be the Light’. Pastor Barrett led the congregation from God’s creation of light to the charge to be the light that God wants us to be, with light being a metaphor for spiritual illumination and life. The lasting message was that the radiance that shines from us should be a result of Jesus’ presence within each of us.

The theme of mission continued into the afternoon as Pastor Smith delivered a second workshop on creating connections and making meaningful relationships with non-Adventists. By changing our mindset, embracing people for who they are, and spending quality time with others, the Holy Spirit can do mighty things through friendships. Councillor Angela Sterling-Baker also led a workshop for couples on the seven successful steps for a strong relationship.

If nothing else, members grasped that ‘the strongest argument in favour of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian’ (Ministry of Healing p.470). A packed and spirit-filled day left the Gloucestershire District inspired for mission.

Finally, the members, Board of Elders, along with Senior Pastor Wayne Smikle and Associate Pastor Spase Gilgorov, are very grateful for the opportunity to be blessed by the ministry of the Directors of the South England Conference.
