Obituary for Arthur John Woodfield (11 September 1916 - 3 September 2024)

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Arthur John Woodfield, affectionately known as John, who left us peacefully at the age of 107 in Wokingham on 3 September 2024. Born in Hereford on 11 September 1916, John lived a remarkable life filled with dedication to his family, faith, and education.

In 1943, he married Jean Florence Lauderdale, who predeceased him in 1995. Together, they had three children: Rosemary, Christopher, and Elizabeth. In 1999, John married Anne-Marie Parsons, and they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary shortly before his death.

John's early life was marked by resilience; though he left school at 14, his thirst for knowledge led him to achieve a BA, MA, and PhD in English Literature from London University. His commitment to learning led him to a noble profession in education. He trained as a minister in the Seventh-day Adventist Church but soon discovered his passion for teaching. John served as the headmaster of Stanborough School and later taught at Newbold College, where he inspired students with courses in English literature, fine arts, and homiletics for many years until his retirement.

Beyond the classroom, John was a multifaceted talent. He was a self-taught watercolourist, a skilled reproduction furniture maker, an accomplished wood carver, and an avid gardener. In addition to these pursuits, he was a gifted poet, leaving behind a legacy of art and literature that will continue to inspire future generations.

John’s devotion to his faith and the church is evident in the more than 40 years he spent working within the Seventh-day Adventist community, impacting countless lives through his teachings and service. Despite his many accomplishments, John remained a humble man, known for his modesty and sharp sense of humour. His warmth and kindness will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at All Saints Church, Wiltshire Road, Wokingham, RG40 1TN, on 4 October 2024 at 12:30. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the All Saints Church organ restoration fund in his memory.

John Woodfield's legacy of love, learning, and creativity will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched throughout his extraordinary 107 years. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by family, friends, and colleagues.
